Meet Matthew Cardiff, a bright, young science student from the UK. Like most young adults, he is into music, football, and online gaming. Unlike his peers however, Matthew is on a health mission – To live well into his 100s and beyond! Matthew got off to an early start at age 17 and for the past 6 years, has been following the CRON-Diet to stay healthy, boost his immune system and to ensure his longevity.
‘The Calorie Restriction with Optimum Nutrition (CRON) Diet’ involves calorie restriction towards improving health and retarding the aging process while still attempting to supply the recommended daily amounts of various nutrients that the body needs.
Matthew says: “I’m 5ft 8″ and weigh 125 lbs. I eat 1750k/cal – 1800 per day. Through the practice of calorie restriction I hope to be alive when there are true anti-aging therapies available so that I can live even longer. An early start, with hopes of a big pay off, my aim now is to be involved in studying aging.”
In scientific studies, restricted-calorie diets have shown to improve longevity and provide other health benefits but many studies have focused on animals rather than humans. Research studies on animals by the developers of the CRON Diet: Roy Walford, Lisa Walford & Brian M. Delaney have shown that calorie restricted (CR) diets extended the lifespans of nearly every species tested, including worms, spiders, rodents, dogs, cows and monkeys. It is therefore believed likely that people who carefully adopt a CR diet will see similar results. It is unclear why eating less should make animals live longer. While a restricted diet triggers numerous changes at the molecular and genetic levels, only some of these are common across all the species tested. However, there does seem to be a general principle that a dearth of nutrients causes organisms to divert resources away from growth and reproduction and towards basic survival functions. From an evolutionary perspective, these adaptations could help an organism survive famine.
Here is a link to results of a 20-year-long study on caloric restriction in rhesus monkeys that provides the strongest evidence yet that a low-calorie diet produces life-extending metabolic changes in primates — even, perhaps, in people.

Here is a link to another study performed by the creators of the CRON Diet that involves Calorie restriction research in adult mice. The study shows that eating small amounts of nutrient-rich foods helps drop pounds below normal weight and can help humans live longer.
Brian Delaney is also the creator and President of the Calorie Restriction Society whose goals are to help people live longer and healthier lives simply by eating fewer calories & maintaining adequate nutrition. What began as an Internet-based Usenet discussion group, the society now boasts over 7,000 members and is a legally established and recognized U.S non-profit organization.
Our blogger: Matthew Cardiff is now 25 but still looks 17! He believes his calorie reduced diet is to thank for his youthful appearance. His blog has dozens of ‘fans’ who are also following the CRON Diet. The CR society estimates that over 100,000 people are currently following the CRON Diet worldwide – The followers of this CR lifestyle are called ‘CRONies’.
